India vs Australia Shreyas Iyer doubtful for ODI series with back pain injury 2023

The recurrence of Shreyas Iyer's back injury has raised concerns for India in the ongoing fourth and final Test against Australia and has also raised doubts over his availability for the ODI series against the visitors USA which begins March 17.

LIVE UPDATES

Iyer failed to beat in the first round for India in Ahmedabad on Sunday and was taken for diagnostic tests.

With the ODI World Cup in India being the most important tournament of the year and Shreyas KKR expected to lead the IPL, it might be wise to rest for a while.

"Shreyas Iyer complained of lower back pain after the third day of play. He has been scanned and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team," BCCI said in a medical update.

Iyer's injury was revealed after wicketkeeper batsman Kona Bharat came out to pass him after Ravindra Jadeja (28) was sacked in the morning session.

Iyer had also missed the first test in Nagpur due to back problems before returning for the second game in Delhi.

The bigger question now, however, is whether the NCA has again given the green light to a player who is not fully fit.

It was learned that Iyer felt the discomfort on Saturday and Ravindra Jadeja was therefore promoted to No.5.

On Sunday, the player didn't even go down because he failed to score.

“Yes, it could be an injury case that resurfaced after almost 170 overs in the Australian innings. But I don't understand why the previous norm of playing at least one domestic match didn't apply to Iyer?" a former national manager told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Iyer failed the Nagpur test and was declared fit before the Delhi test and he played in both Delhi and Indore but his body did not go through the rigors like he did in Ahmedabad.

When Iyer first developed lower back problems in January, he was out for a month undergoing intensive rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and by the time he was declared fit, the Ranji Trophy season was over anyway.

"But you had an Irani Cup going on and you could have waited for Iyer to come back and let him play the Irani Cup in similar weather conditions and maybe see how the body holds up when he's on the pitch for two days in wet conditions is space." said the coach. .
